My first experience seeing anything about this man was on an episode of 60 Minutes. Before I heard him speak and listened to what he had to say, I was moved by his art work. Like many artists who enter the realm of political statements there is a touch of dark humor and irony in his work. The pieces contain sobering messages of the atrocities that continually occur within China's borders. Two things really stood out to me as I watched. One was the really creative way he poked at the regime in China and the other was the determination he had to use all of his tools to fight the oppression in his native land.
Why are Men not Included in the Discussion?
In all of this, I feel that we have failed ourselves in one of the key components of this narrative. What are we to do with the "men" in this tale?
If We Only Had A Rewind Button
Conservatives everywhere are overjoyed that Roe was overturned. Sadly, these are many of the same people who used a similar slogan as abortion rights activists "my body my rights" in response to the government's push to vaccinate as many Americans as possible during the worse times of the Covid 19 pandemic. It is okay in this context but not another. Complete hypocrisy. And that is what so much of our lives comes down to each day.
What Just Happened?
On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade (Roe) and Casey v Planned Parenthood. Needless to say it was a dark day in American jurisprudence. Worse, many of the freedoms and rights, gained by women and the LGBTQ community seem to be on the brink of extinction as well. This ruling has upended almost 50 years of judicial precedent. Discarded as if it did not mean a thing. These rights are bestowed upon people at birth because we are all human beings. Not because it says so in the Bible but because they are our natural rights, each and every one of us.
Our Voice - We have the Power!
I wanted to accomplish a few things with this blog. I hoped to educate some people on the topics I cover. And do not worry, they will not all be politically motivated. I hoped to have my voice heard in a sea of rants and raves. Add the fact that I just like hearing myself talk about my opinions and you have the potential for a lot of blabbering. Oh well.
January 6th Hearings - Initial Thoughts
Just a quick one today as I sit here recounting what I saw on television the other night. Day 1 of the January 6th hearings aired and they did not disappoint. Sensationalized? Sure to a degree. But you have to agree that the "never before seen' video of January 6th storming of the capital was far more brutal, front and center, than I had ever imagined. "Overwhelming" might be a better term for it. "Witch Hunt"? No, I do not
